Biography While many Russians are keen to go abroad, there are foreigners who dream of living in Russia. One of them is German journalist and former insurance broker Thomas Röper. In the late 1990s, he first came to the city on the Neva River and fell in love with it forever. Childhood and youth The biography of Thomas Röper began on 26 November 1971 in Germany. The exact place of his birth is not established. According to one version, he was born in Bremen, according to another - in Schönkirchen. Since childhood, Thomas was fond of calculations and dreamed of becoming a banker. After graduating from school, he entered the Christian Albrecht University of Kiel, where he studied insurance and banking. Career The graduate began his dizzying ascent up the career ladder almost immediately after graduation in 1994. His lack of practical experience did not prevent him from being appointed to a management position at the Volksfürsorge insurance company. In 1998, Thomas Röper moved to St Petersburg, where he worked for two years as marketing director at the joint-stock company Rus. Being forced to return to his homeland, he left Russia, but always knew that he would definitely come back. The next leap in Röper's career came when he joined the German insurance group HDI. Here he was responsible for the development of insurance in Eastern Europe. At the same time, the top manager held a seat on the Board of Directors of the Bulgarian company Hanover COOP Bulgaria, and later moved to the status of a member of the Management Board. In 2003 Thomas Röper returned to Russia. He was invited to the position of Deputy General Director of AlfaStrakhovanie Group. This appointment was no accident: during his years of work in the insurance market of Eastern Europe, the German specialist had acquired invaluable experience and skills that allowed him to improve the efficiency of the Russian company. In his new position, he was in charge of calculating insurance rates and organising operational underwriting of risks. Journalism and blogging Having built an illustrious career in insurance, Thomas Röper envisioned conquering new heights. In 2015, a Russian news agency invited him to collaborate. Despite the fact that the broker had never dreamed of journalistic fame, he decided to try his hand at science journalism. Thomas Röper today The German journalist and blogger is still actively involved in the social and political life of Russia. He runs his own YouTube channel and also gives interviews to other video bloggers and journalists, in particular Robert Stein, where he speaks in favour of Russia and its actions in Ukraine. He also has a Telegram channel where he duplicates articles published in Anti-Spiegel. At the end of winter 2022, Thomas Röper attended a conference on geopolitical relations between the West and Russia. He has also travelled to Donbass several times since spring in order to ‘report truthfully’ in his publications. In May 2022, Thomas Röper and his American colleague John Dugan were the heroes of a report from the Kherson region shown on Channel One. In it, foreign journalists told the correspondent about the withholding of information in the West. Interesting facts Thomas is a lover of travel, he prefers to rest near the sea. Another hobby of the blogger is scuba diving and underwater photography. Röper accidentally found his favourite pet at his summer cottage. The puppy was abandoned by holidaymakers, and he took it with him. The new neighbour, as the blogger signed the photo, was named Marco.
