A pseudo-intellectual pastiche of postmodern and neo-Marxist tropes, dedicated to the idea that categories themselves do nothing but privilege and oppress.

A continually mutating series of politically fashionable rhetorical weapons camouflaged as faux-altruism, wielded by a loose alliance of nihilistic narcissists pursuing personal status, wealth, and power. The unifying principle is psychological; it only mimics a philosophy.

Woke is a blanket term used to describe a variety of movements linked to identity politics^[w4m] and postmodernism. These movements include Black Lives Matter, Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions^[w4m], Extinction Rebellion^[w4m], feminism and modern decolonization^[w4m] and their participants. These movements are said to be on the woke continuum. People who consider themselves woke generally:

• Consider themselves to be tolerant, inclusive and kind
• Consider themselves to be left-wing
• Support identity politics
• Support postmodernism
• Support feminism
• Support critical theory
• Believe in rape culture
• Believe in male privilege
• Believe in white privilege
• Believe in The Patriarchy^[w4m]
• Believe that street harassment^[w4m] is a serious problem
• Believe in and reject cultural appropriation
• Favour diversity over merit
• Favour strong limitations on free speech^[w4m]
• Are intolerance of alternative view points and tend to accuse others of homophobia or victim blaming

Intolerance

The woke are typically intolerant but use the language of tolerance. They are typically exclusionary while using the language of inclusion. They typically claim to be kind but are often unkind.

Left Wing

Much discussion on woke coming from both sides often regards woke as synonymous with the left and anti-woke with the right. This is an over-simplification. While the woke are nearly universally on the left, anti-woke exists across the political spectrum.

The World Socialist Web Site^[w4m] takes an explicit anti-woke position.

The split between feminists and women's rights activists also demonstrates that people on the left can be anti-woke.

Happiness

A large 2024 study conducted in Finland found that people reporting woke attitudes were less happy and had higher levels of anxiety and depression than the rest of the community. These results were statistically significant.
