Power station and dam

The Binational Corporation Yacyretá (Spanish: Entidad Binacional Yacyretá; German: Binationale Körperschaft Yacyretá) is an Betreiberoperating company[wp] that runs the dam[wp] and hydroelectric power plant[wp] on the Paraná River[wp] on the border between Paraguay[wp] and Argentina[wp]. The plant is located near the Paraguayan town of Ayolas[wp], 35 kilometres west of the Argentinian town of Posadas[wp] and 200 kilometres east of Corrientes[wp] at the Apipé rapids[wp]. The dam is also used for flood control.

History

On 23 January 1953, the governments of Argentina and Paraguay signed an agreement to carry out technical studies for the production of electrical energy from the Río Paraná near the islands of Yacyretá[wp] and Apipé[wp] and to improve the navigability of the river. As the need for alternative energy resources became increasingly clear due to the global oil crisis in 1973[wp], the President of Paraguay General Alfredo Stroessner[wp] and the Vice President of Argentina Isabel Perón[wp] signed the Treaty of Yacyretá on 3 December 1973 in the Palacio de López.[1] Construction work began ten years later on 3 December 1983. The first turbine was commissioned on 2 September 1994 and the 20th and final turbine on 2 July 1998. The reservoir reached its full height of 83 metres in 2011.[2]
