Itaipu Binacional is a binational operating company[wp] that operates the dam[wp] and hydroelectric power plant[wp] on the Paraná River[wp] on the border between Paraguay[wp] and Brazil[wp]. The power plant was commissioned in 1984 after more than 10 years of construction. The project cost a total of 19.6 billion US dollars.[1]

Operation

In 2016, 3,038 people were employed at the dam, 1,371 on the Brazilian side and 1,667 on the Paraguayan side.[2]

The central control room is located exactly on the demarcation line between Brazil and Paraguay, which is marked on the floor. The purely Brazilian and Paraguayan operating teams alternate in shifts. Visitors can take a look into the control room from a gallery.

Geographical location

The plant is located in the Itaipu suburb of the Paraguayan city of Hernandarias[wp], 15 kilometres north of the city of Ciudad del Este[wp], which is connected to the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguaçu[wp] via the Friendship Bridge[wp].[3]

Eleven kilometres south of Ciudad del Este lies Triple Frontier[wp], the border triangle between the three countries of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
