Coat of Arms of Chernivtsi Oblast

The Chernivtsi Autonomous Oblast is part of a proposal for a Ukrainian federal state to be created in the course of the Federalisation of Ukraine. The existing oblast would be upgraded to an autonomous oblast, which would entail the granting of certain autonomy rights.

The autonomous oblast covers an area of 8,100 square kilometres and has a population of around 900,000 inhabitants, 20% of whom are Romanians. The oblast centre is Chernivtsi[wp].

Territory

The territory of the Chernivtsi Autonomous Oblast would be identical to that of the current Chernivtsi Oblast[wp].

Status

The Chernivtsi Oblast would receive the status of an Autonomous Oblast, whose autonomy would be less far-reaching than that of an Autonomous Republic.
