Drum majorette
A drum majorette or majorette is a female who marches, twirling[wp] a baton[wp]. There may be only one majorette leading a marching brass[wp] band[wp], or there may be a group of majorettes parading together.
Drum majorettes typically wear sexy quasi-military uniforms that include hats or caps[wipi], jackets (often ornamented with gold braid), miniskirts[wipi] and boots[wipi]. Traditionally, they wore high peaked caps, but recently smaller caps have become prevalent.[1]
Origin and development
Majorettes originally performed a typical carnival[wp] dance originating in the Rhineland, where the young women who perform this dance are called Tanzmariechen (Dance Marys) in German or Dansmarietjes in Dutch.
During the carnival, the normal form of government was parodied. Also the army and defense forces were traditionally parodied as a way of protesting against the Prussian[wp] occupation of the Rhenish area at the time. In Cologne, these imitations arose in particular to make Prussian militarism look ridiculous.[2]
