Melitopol Oblast

Melitopol Oblast is part of a proposal for a Ukrainian federal state to be created in the course of the Federalisation of Ukraine.

The hypothetical Melitopol oblast is an oblast located in the south-west of the European part of Russia, which belongs to the Federal District of Southern Russia. The administrative area would emerge from the Ukrainian oblast of Zaporizhzhia[wp], but would not include the raion of the same name[wp], which is currently under the control of the Ukrainian central administration.

The new oblast capital could become Melitopol[wp], whose function it already fulfils de facto, which would suggest renaming the oblast in Melitopol Oblast.

Joining the Federal District of Southern Russia in 2022

In a referendum on 27 September 2022, the majority of the citizens of the parts of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast under Russian control declared their secession from Ukraine and annexation to the Russian Federation. The population of the territories of the Zaporizhzhia Raion[wp] and northern parts of the Polohy Raion[wp] were not able to take part in the referendum.

Current status of the Zaporizhzhya oblast

Melitopol[wp] is the de facto provisional capital of the oblast.

WikiMANNia comment
Melitopol is the provisional capital of the oblast because an oblast is named after its capital according to the rules. In view of the fact that the part of the Zaporizhzhia oblast under Russian military control was incorporated into the Russian Federation under the name 'Zaporizhzhia oblast" as a result of the democratic legitimisation of a relevant expression of the will of the majority of citizens there in a plebiscite, it can be assumed that the aim is also to conquer the Zaporizhzhia Raion[wp], to incorporate it into the already incorporated part of the oblast of the same name and to restore the city of Zaporizhzhia[wp] to its function as the oblast capital.

However, the entry 'Melitopol oblast' is based on the proposal to renounce the Zaporizhzhia raion and reorganise the oblast under the name 'Melitopol oblast', assuming that the Russian side is seeking reconciliation with Ukraine.

The city of Melitopol would then also become the de jure capital of the oblast.
