Newspeak

Newspeak is the fictional language in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four^[wp], written by George Orwell^[wp]. It is a controlled language created by the totalitarian state as a tool to limit free thought, and concepts that pose a threat to the regime such as freedom, self-expression, individuality, peace, etc. Any form of thought alternative to the party's construct is classified as "thoughtcrime".

Newspeak is the of an authoritarian regime prescribed, artificially altered language. The aim of this is to reduce the number and range of meaning of the words to direct the communication of the population in close and controlled paths. This made so-called "thoughtcrime" impossible. The newspeak of our day is called political correctness or femispeak.

Das Ziel dieser Sprachpolitik ist es, die Anzahl und das Bedeutungsspektrum der Wörter zu verringern, um die Kommunikation der Bevölkerung in enge, kontrollierte Bahnen zu lenken. Damit sollen so genannte de:Gedankenverbrechen unmöglich werden. Das Neusprech unserer Tage heißt de:Political Correctness oder de:Femisprech.

Newspeak is a term from the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four^[wp], written by George Orwell^[wp], in which the dystopia^[wp] of a totalitarian state surveillance and prevention is presented in 1984. Protagonist of the story is Winston Smith, an ordinary member of the party that aims is to secure in spite of the adverse circumstances his privacy. As a result, he comes into conflict with the system, the subjects him to brainwashing. The novel Nineteen Eighty-Four" is reminiscent of the Stalinist purges of the mid 20th Century, and shows how important language is the basis of thought: words symbolize terms and their oceans of meaning.

Neusprech ist ein Begriff aus dem Roman "1984"^[wp] von Georg Orwell^[wp], in dem die Dystopie^[wp] eines totalitären Überwachungs- und Präventionsstaates im Jahre 1984 dargestellt wird. Protagonist der Handlung ist Winston Smith, ein einfaches Mitglied der Partei, das sich den widrigen Umständen zum Trotz seine Privatsphäre sichern will. Dadurch gerät er in Konflikt mit dem System, das ihn einer Gehirnwäsche unterzieht. Der Roman "1984" erinnert an die stalinistischen Säuberungen Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts und zeigt, wie wichtig Sprache als Grundlage des Denkens ist: Worte symbolisieren Begriffe und ihre Bedeutungswelten.

Niemand soll in der Lage sein, aufgrund von historischen Dokumenten Aussagen der Partei zu widerlegen.

In Orwell's world, the three superpowers cause only limited wars on the periphery. It is enough for them to move the population to be content with poverty and lack because of the "state of war". However, the protagonists suspect in the course of the novel at some point that perhaps the government itself throws off bombs in order to maintain the presence of war.

In Orwells Welt führen die drei Supermächte nur noch begrenzte Kriege an der Peripherie. Es genügt ihnen, um die Bevölkerung dazu zu bewegen, sich mit Armut und Mangel infolge des "Kriegszustandes" zufriedenzugeben. Um zu unterstreichen, dass die Bevölkerung sich mit dem Zustand zufriedengeben kann (und muss), verbreitet die Partei den Slogan "Krieg ist Frieden", wobei Frieden der stets erwünschte und zu erreichende Zustand ist, der regelmäßig in der "Berichterstattung" in "greifbare Nähe rückt". Allerdings vermuten die Protagonisten im Zuge des Romans irgendwann, dass möglicherweise die Regierung selbst Bomben abwirft, um die Gegenwärtigkeit des Kriegs aufrechtzuerhalten.

Doublethink is a central theme of the novel. If the party says 2 + 2 = 5, then it is so. It is also not enough just to say it and to lie there, but you have to really believe it. Hier setzt dann das eigentliche Zwiedenken ("Doublethink") ein, da vom linientreuen Parteimitglied verlangt wird, zwischen "zwei Wahrheiten hin- und herzuschalten" (in einem Moment 2 + 2 = 5, im nächsten 2 + 2 = 4), ohne sich dessen bewusst zu sein. Eine objektive de:Wahrheit außerhalb der Partei gibt es nicht.

Wenn Ozeanien mit einem Staat Krieg führt, dann führte es schon immer mit diesem Staat Krieg und wird auch in Zukunft immer mit diesem Staat Krieg führen, während man mit dem anderen Staat immer in Frieden lebte und auch in Zukunft immer in Frieden leben wird. Wer das nicht anerkennt, begeht ein Gedankenverbrechen.

Es gilt auch als Verbrechen, nicht den je nach Anlass geforderten freudigen, ernsten oder auch hasserfüllten Gesichtsausdruck zu tragen.

Newspeak

The term newspeak refers to a language that has been artificially modified for political reasons. Newspeak is the official language was introduced. Newspeak is divided into three parts. Neusprech ist die eingeführte Amtssprache. Neusprech ist in drei Teile gegliedert. Teil A umfasst die Alltagssprache, die von jeder politischen und ideologischen Bedeutung frei sein sollte. Teil B stellt das unabdingbare Minimum des ideologischen und politischen Wortschatzes dar. Teil C ist mit Abstand der umfangreichste und beinhaltet die technischen und wissenschaftlichen Fachausdrücke.

Das zeigt der Satz "Altdenker unintusfühl Engsoz" im Kommentar der Parteizeitung in Neusprech. Die bestmögliche Übersetzung in Altsprech lautet: "Derjenige, dessen Weltanschauung sich vor der Revolution geformt hat, kann die Prinzipien des Englischen Sozialismus niemals in seiner letzten Tiefe erfühlen und verstehen." Dies wäre aber nur eine unzureichende Übersetzung.

Was there Altsprech for each adjective or a corresponding opposite, in Newspeak any contrary is formed by the prefix "un". For example, as in Esperanto is the opposite of good offense and hot unwarm. Superlative forms as better, best, and so on are replaced by plusgut or doppelplusgut. Moreover, almost all irregularities are aligned with the rules. Longer terms such as "Ministry of Truth" are shortened to simply Minitrue. Faded behind the original meaning of the words.

Gab es in Altsprech für jedes Adjektiv noch ein entsprechendes Gegenteil, so wird in Neusprech jedes Gegenteil durch ein vorgestelltes "un" gebildet. So lautet zum Beispiel wie in Esperanto das Gegenteil von gut ungut und von warm unwarm. Steigerungsformen wie besser, am besten und so weiter werden durch plusgut beziehungsweise doppelplusgut ersetzt. Außerdem werden fast alle Unregelmäßigkeiten an die Regeln angeglichen. Längere Bezeichnungen wie "Ministerium für Wahrheit" werden einfach zu Miniwahr verkürzt. Dahinter verblasst auch die ursprüngliche Bedeutung der Worte.

In Parolen der Partei, wie zum Beispiel Krieg ist Frieden, Freiheit ist Sklaverei und Unwissenheit ist Stärke, werden den Wörtern einfach neue Bedeutungen zugewiesen, damit sie nicht gegen die Partei verwendet werden können. Auch haben Wörter je nach Bezug(sperson) andere Bedeutungen, so kann "schwarzweiß", ob benutzt für Parteimitglieder oder -feinde, besondere Parteitreue oder aber Landesverrat bedeuten. Damit unterbindet die Partei von Anfang an, dass ein alternatives System gedacht werden kann. Als Beispiel beschrieb Orwell Kritik am großen Bruder in Neusprech "Der große Bruder ist ungut." Weiter differenzieren oder begründen kann der Sprecher den Sachverhalt nicht. Für ein orthodoxes Parteimitglied ist solches Verbrechendenk oder Deldenk nur ein grober Fluch und für die Partei ungefährlich.

Dieser hat, ist erst einmal die totale Demokratie ausgebrochen, gar nichts mehr selbst zu entscheiden. Stattdessen bestimmt das Kollektiv für ihn! Nicht nur, wann, wo, was und wie er arbeitet, sondern auch über Größe, Lage und Beschaffenheit seiner Unterkunft, Menge und Qualität seiner Nahrung und Frequenz des Unterwäschewechsels.
